While Pergo laminate floors are very durable, in the most extreme circumstances, your beautiful floor can be blemished. But that doesn’t mean your floor’s beauty is tarnished forever. There are several ways you can easily remove scratches to restore your laminate floors to their former gorgeous glory in practically no time. Here’s how.
Pencil in Some Color
One of the easiest ways to repair minor scratches on laminate is to use a scratch repair pen. You simply find the scratch, color it in with the pen, and then gently buff the area with a soft cloth until it blends in with the floor.
It’s as easy as coloring.
The pens are available in a variety of shades, with some, like the non-toxic ScratchCure repair pen offered in shades that are buildable. This means the more strokes, the darker the color turns, which makes it easier to match your floor’s color.
Put Some Putty On It
When pens are no match for those deeper scratches and gauges, sometimes you have to call for backup, or in this case, floor repair putty. With a plastic putty knife, a paper towel and your floor repair putty, you can fix most scratches in under a few minutes.
Start by wiping the scratch area with a dry paper towel. Then apply the repair putty on top of the scratch, making sure it reaches down into the groove. Next, run the plastic putty knife (avoid a metal putty knife as it can further scratch your floor) over the area, gently smoothing the putty into the scratch.
Finally, clean the excess with a dry paper towel, or soap and water depending on the type of putty. Although this won’t remove the scratch completely, it will take an eagle eye to notice the original blemish.
Roberts makes putty offered in a variety of colors that work on wood and vinyl, too. Just remember to always check your floor’s manual and warranty before applying any substance to your floors.
Get a Pergo Repair Kit
If you have different color Pergo floors throughout your home, each with their own assortment of fixes needed, then it can be expensive tracking down all the repair tools that match the floor’s color. That’s why we recommend getting the whole kit and caboodle with Pergo Floor Restore, which can be used on all Pergo laminate floors. Whether it’s repairing chips, gouges or scratches, this repair kit has everything you need, including:
- Pergo finishing putty
- Color tints
- Mixing bowl
What makes this kit so valuable are the limitless color options to mix and match.
The kit also includes a helpful formula chart to ensure that you mix the correct concoction for the appropriate damage, saving you the time and headache of trial and error.
Replace The Plank
Sometimes scratches can be so deep that a pen, putty or kit won’t do any good. If that’s the case, it might be time to replace the plank. While this can be done yourself, we recommend consulting a Pergo expert from either Lowe’s or The Home Depot. As always, check your floor’s warranty before you or a professional decide that a repair is right for your Pergo floors.
